Environmental Studies is the science of Environment which includes Natural Cycles, Natural Resources, Natural Calamities and Environmental Conservation and Protection. The question is not WHAT, it is WHY! Why do we need to study the Environment? Here is why -

I remember my childhood when I used to have a subject called EVS or Environmental Studies at school. Astonishingly, it was meant for the students in the ages of 6 years old to 8 years old. After that, I never heard of what Environmental Studies is. Looking at the present condition of the environment I am forced to go back and check where did we go wrong!

The environmental crisis is the premier concern of 2019. It’s not the government, industries or policies which needs to be fixed, but we the people. People need to be informed, educated and influenced to bring them to the path of Environmental Sustainability. Gen Z (born after 1997) may look young and mature, but they are the most concerned and sufferers of environmental degradation and Climate Change. Also, the next upcoming generation has to be well prepared to counter the pollution and bring back the environment to the right track.

Students in India are being taught EVS - Environmental Science at a very early stage but why India is suffering such great record-breaking levels of pollution? It is because Literacy is different from Education. If you have actually studied Environmental Science, you must have an idea that how insignificant that subject is treated. Teachers don’t even consider that as an actual science making it even difficult for students to take it seriously. We continue Mathematics, Sciences and Languages to upper levels of education but we leave Environmental Studies behind. Because it is not important. The root of the problem lies here. When things go well, we party as if it’s 90s. This went quite literally this time. The effect of an ignored environmental education rose to a level where we need to keep everything aside and focus on the core environmental studies.

The hope and future of the environment lie in the hands of new generations. The damage cannot be undone but we can still try to keep our planet habitable. We as the fittest species should understand how important this home is to us and other living beings. We could be the only living being of the universe and the last who went extinct because of their own. We need to build this sense of responsibility towards the environment as we have towards our possessions. Nature is our possession and it needs to be protected! Let’s go back to the flashback and study Environmental Science again.

The young ones who hate the subject of the environment, I would request you to please not commit the same mistake which we did. You have a voice, you have the will, You can change the world.
